Nazimova Camille

"How dare you bring that gigolo to my table? How dare you introduce that pimp to Nazimova?" This was the legendary reaction Alla Nazimova had when first introduced to Rudolph Valentino in 1919. Fast-forward two years, and the theatrical diva had cast that very same “gigolo” as her romantic lead in her highly stylized, avant-garde silent masterpiece, Camille. Having become the highest-paid actress of her era before transitioning into cinema, Nazimova’s uncompromising commitment to artistic experimentation ultimately sabotaged her legacy. Suffering a string of legendary box office busts that only later gained critical appreciation for their striking production value—not to mention the decadent rumours of what went on behind the scenes.

Camille stands as a peak example of this artistic ambition, largely stealing the show through its exquisite, geometric sets and costumes. Designed by Nazimova’s young protégé, Natacha Rambova, who, as fate would have it, met and married the young Valentino during this era, becoming the most influential figure of his short life. Rambova's striking Art Deco ornamentation injected the film with an ultra-modern aesthetic, featuring futuristic automatic doors and sweeping curved entrances that were heavily ahead of their time.

Loosely based on the Alexandre Dumas play The Lady of the Camellias, the film transposes the classic tragic romance into roaring 1920s Paris. Camille sees Nazimova play Marguerite Gautier, a high-society Parisian courtesan who rules the local nightlife but secretly suffers from terminal tuberculosis. Enter Armand Duval (Valentino), an idealistic young law student who falls in love with her. Unaware of her fatal illness, Armand abandons his studies to retreat to the countryside with her, until his status-conscious father intervenes and begs Marguerite to leave his son to protect the family's reputation.
